Following a career in the Army, which included active service, Richard qualified as a Chartered Surveyor. Before entering Parliament, he ran a business which included farming, forestry and the management of rural and urban housing. Richard has five sons who share his enjoyment of the countryside and sport.
Previously Leader of the Conservatives on Newbury District Council Richard was elected as MP in 2005, reducing the 22,000 Liberal Democrat majority to win it by a margin of 3,400 votes. In 2010 he increased his majority to 12,248. In July 2007, Richard was appointed as an Opposition Whip, and in January 2009 became a Shadow Minister for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. In May 2010 Richard was appointed Minister for the Natural Environment and Fisheries as part of the Coalition Government.
