 |
Shadow Minister for Higher Education
Rob's Experience
Before becoming the Parliamentary Candidate for Reading East, Rob previously fought two Parliamentary elections in 1997 and 2001, and was campaign manager during the successful 1992 campaign in Reading East. Rob has also acted as an advisor to David Davis MP.
Rob was elected as a councillor in Thames ward in June 2004. Before that, he represented Caversham, where in 2003 he became the first Conservative candidate to unseat a Labour councillor in a decade. He had also represented Thames between 1992 and 1996.
He is currently running campaigns for the improvement of Reading's education system, changes to local education admissions policy, cutting police bureaucracy, overdevelopment, and giving pensioners a fair deal.
He was elected as a Member of Parliament in May 2005, and was appointed a Shadow Minister for Higher Education in July 2007.
About Rob
Rob is very much a local candidate, born and brought up in south Oxfordshire before moving to Reading in 1984. He arrived in Reading as a student attending Reading University. He is married to Jane and they have three young children and currently live in Thames ward. Rob has also lived in Park, Redlands and Caversham wards. He has represented local people as a councillor on Reading Borough Council and is well known for his campaigning and hard work in serving his constituency.
Having lived in Reading East for 20 years and represented local people as a councillor, Rob was delighted when his home constituency chose him to be their Parliamentary candidate at an open selection meeting. At the time Rob contrasted his selection at an open meeting to Labour's deselection of their sitting MP, Jane Griffiths. He said: "there is a clear difference between our open and transparent selection process and Labour's stitch-up of Jane Griffiths."
Rob is an entrepreneur, successfully building several businesses over the past decade in the health and communications sectors. His head office is in London and he commutes to work, so he knows first hand the local transport problems!
Rob regards crime, education and immigration as three of the most important issues facing both Reading East and the country as a whole. Rob is committed to serving local people, he says: "Unlike the local Labour Party I will represent Reading East in Westminster and not Westminster in Reading East."
