I'm very much a local man, born and brought up in south Oxfordshire before moving to Reading in 1984 as a student attending Reading University. I’m married to my wife Jane, we have four children and currently live in Caversham.
I made my name in Reading as an entrepreneur, successfully building several businesses over the past decade in the health and telecommunications sectors.
Before becoming the Parliamentary Candidate for Reading East, I previously fought two Parliamentary elections in 1997 and 2001, and was campaign manager during the successful 1992 campaign in Reading East. I also acted as an advisor to David Davis MP – now prominent due to his unflinching defence of civil liberties.
I was elected as a Councillor for Thames ward in June 2004. Before that, I represented Caversham where, in 2003, I became the first Conservative candidate to unseat a Labour councillor in a decade.
I was elected as a Member of Parliament in May 2005, and was appointed as Shadow Minister for Higher Education in July 2007. Following David Cameron's reshuffle in January 2009, I was promoted to the Whip's Office.
As a Whip, I had responsibility for two departmental teams, about 20 MPs and ensuring Opposition activity in the Commons Chamber was well co-ordinated and smoothly run.
I was re-elected as Member of Parliament in May 2010.
