Desperate Labour resort to scare tactics

Conservatives on Reading Borough Council are aware that Labour activists have been trying to scare Reading residents with lies about what they describe as “Conservative plans”. So that there is no doubt, here are six very specific commitments from the Reading Conservative Team:

•    Conservatives will keep free bus passes for pensioners – this has been our promise in successive elections
•    Conservatives will keep Sure Start Children’s Centres _ we support and want to improve Sure Start and have no intention of closing these centres
•    Conservatives will maintain Reading’s care homes for the elderly – it was Labour that closed Wilton House and moved elderly and frail residents out
•    Conservatives will keep Council ownership of Reading buses and not scrap night buses – under Labour’s leadership routes have been cut and frequency reduced
•    Conservatives will improve local schools and seek to increase funding – it is Labour that has failed to properly fund local schools
•    Conservatives will protect Kennet Meadows and other green spaces – it is the Labour government’s housing targets that have increased pressure to build on our remaining unspoilt open spaces

Councillor Andrew Cumpsty, Leader of the Conservative Group, said “The Labour party is getting ever more desperate and resorting to scaremongering and the politics of fear. It is simply irresponsible to worry people yet further at a time when they have to deal with financial crisis resulting from Labour’s economic mismanagement.  What is absolutely despicable is that many of these Labour lies are directed at the most vulnerable in our town – parents with young children are being told that Sure Start is under threat, and pensioners are told that that Conservatives would cut the winter fuel allowance, the free bus travel, the free TV allowance.”

Cllr Cumpsty concluded, “I urge people not to be frightened by a Labour government that is trying to scare you into not opting for change.”
