Conservatives in Reading are delighted to be achieving success in their efforts to get action taken to tackle the drug dealing problem in the Orts Road area.
This problem has been on-going for some time and despite numerous claims from Labour Councillors that action is being taken, very little evidence of this can be seen. Local Conservatives have been working with Reading East MP Rob Wilson to get real action.
This work has now paid off and Abbey ward Conservative Campaigner Andrew Waters is very pleased with the progress that has been achieved following his intensive campaign. Local police have said that there will be increased lighting and surveillance cameras will be installed in the area to combat the drug problem and make residents feel safer during the hours of darkness.
Local residents Bill Howarth & Adrian Symonds where delighted to hear the news. Mr. Howarth said, “This problem has been a real blight on our neighbourhood for years and nothing has been done about it, I am really pleased that all the work that Rob & Andrew have put in terms of raising the profile of this issue has paid off”. Mr. Symonds added, “We often feel totally ignored in this part of Reading, Rob & Andrew have given us a real voice on this issue.”
Richard Nante, Landlord of The Fishermans Cottage, said, “I would like to thank both Andrew & Rob for their help. We are trying to build a community focused business here and getting rid of the drugs problem in the area will certainly help".
“This problem has been a real blight on the area for some time”, commented Andrew Waters, “back in early 2008 the local Labour group bought Justice Secretary Jack Straw to the Orts Road area in a much publicised effort to show how their initiatives had been successful. As we now know, this was little more than a window-dressing exercise to gain votes at the local elections later that year. Since then Labour has abandoned the problem, allowing the dealers to ply their trade. Labour is obviously tired and complacent, and once again we have proved that it’s the Conservatives who can get the action taken!”
