Group Leader - Cllr Andrew Cumpsty (Caversham)

Andrew Cumpsty was re-elected in 2010. He is Leader of Reading Borough Council and spokesman on Reading's Olympics involvement.

Andrew has served as a Councillor for Caversham ward since his first election in the Spring of 2004.

Andrew lives in the centre of Caversham and has been holding monthly surgeries across the whole of the ward, in order to ensure that the residents of Caversham have the very best of access to their Councillor.

He is a Director of a Public Relations Company in London, as well as being Chairman of his own company, The Enterprise Forum.

In addition, Andrew is a director of two charities in Reading and when he can find spare time enjoys the theatre, playing golf and swimming.

Cllr Fred Pugh (Mapledurham)

Fred Pugh was re-elected in May 2008. Fred was Group leader from 1997 to January 2008 and was Mayor of Reading in 2009/10

Cllr David Stevens (Thames)

David Stevens was re-elected in 2010. He is Lead Councillor for Finance & Service Improvement.

Cllr Isobel Ballsdon (Thames)

Isobel Ballsdon was re-elected in 2008, and is currently Secretary of the Conservative Group and Chair of the Planning Applications committee.

Isobel commuted from Caversham to London working in property before starting a family, at which time she switched to locally based voluntary work. She ran both the Caversham Branch of the National Childbirth Trust and “Escape”, the parent and toddler group at Mapledurham Pavilion.

When Isobel’s younger child started school she took up a part-time local job dealing with restoring old and historic buildings.

Isobel led the successful “Now Out Of Catchment” (NOOC) sibling campaign in 2001. The campaign closed a loophole caused by the Council’s failure to protect NOOC siblings from being split between primary schools after changing the catchment areas.

Isobel was Vice Chairman of the Kings Meadow Campaign, which lobbied English Heritage to get a Grade II listing for the baths. This in turn protected the western end of the meadow from being sold for the development of a large private 6-storey hotel, apartments and conference facilities.

With her passion for nature Isobel is an active member of Caversham GLOBE (Go Local On a Better Environment) planting hedging, doing litter clearance and, until becoming a Councillor, being the group’s Secretary.

Isobel enjoys gardening, music, sailing, swimming, and walking.

Cllr Jeanette Skeats (Thames)

Jeanette Skeats has represented Thames Ward since she was first elected in 1996.

During her time on the Council she has been a member of scrutiny panels and committees covering most of the Council but her interest has always been Licensing and she now Chairs the Council's Licensing Committee.

Jeanette was the former Chairman of the Caversham Court Gazebo Trust and as such helped initiate a successful bid from the Lottery Heritage Fund.

Jeanette continues to help fundraise for local charities and is a Patron for the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation. She was a former governor at Hemdean House School and Saint Martins Primary School.

Jeanette served as Mayor of Reading in 2003/2004 and as the first citizen of Reading she promoted and represented the town on many formal occasions and worked closely with the voluntary sector and local groups, fundraising for various charities.

Cllr Mark Ralph (Peppard)

Mark Ralph was re-elected in May 2010. He is Lead Councillor for Education and Children's Services.

Having worked in Reading since 1988 and lived in Caversham since 1991, Mark was first elected as a Councillor for Peppard Ward in 2004.

The following are some of the issues that Mark thinks are important and some of the areas in which he has been involved.

Key interests include:

Education and Youth Services - Mark has taken an active role campaigning for changes to the Primary and Secondary Schools Admissions processes. He is a Governor at Micklands Primary School, taught at Reading College and worked with a number of local sports clubs to recruit young members.

Crime Prevention and Protection of our law-abiding citizens - an area of considerable local concern. He has worked closely with the Caversham police team, resulting in a much higher police presence, authorisation of a Dispersal Order in summer 2005 and a focus on the reduction of graffiti and anti-social behaviour.

Health and Services for the elderly - Peppard Ward has one of the older age profiles in Reading. Protection of local amenities and provision of good public transport, health and social services are vital.

Mark is pledged to continue to address these wider issues while working on the things my constituents tell him are important on a day-to-day basis, such as building development, Council Tax, traffic, transport and care of our environment.

Cllr Richard Willis (Peppard)

Richard Willis was elected on 3rd May 2007. He is Lead Councillor for Strategic Planning and Transport.

Richard was previously a Reading Borough Councillor for the neighbouring Thames ward from 2001 to 2004 and now lives in Caversham Park Village in the heart of Peppard ward.

Richard has a strong track record of fighting for local people since he first moved to Reading in 1995. He campaigned in 1999-2000 against Labour’s previous suggestions of a congestion charge and fought to save Wilton House care home for the elderly from closure.

Richard was previously an insurance broker for two different broking houses in Reading after serving in the RAF as a Commissioned Officer. Richard’s first ever employment was as a schoolmaster, teaching ‘A’ level Economics and British Government.

In his spare time Richard is a Squadron Leader in the Royal Auxiliary Air Force and in 2004 was a Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Honorary Organiser. He collects English porcelain and enjoys the theatre and singing.

Cllr Jamie Chowdhary (Peppard)

Jamie Chowdhary was elected in 2008. He first moved to Reading in 1966, attending local schools before joining the Metropolitan Police in 1975. In 1980 he returned to Reading, working in electronics and communications before establishing his first company in 1984, relocating to Caversham in 1990.

Jamie now has a variety of business interests across Reading and Caversham, including an international communications company based in Tilehurst. He is passionate that Reading should be a better and safer place to be.

Cllr Tom Stanway (Caversham)

Tom Stanway was elected on 3rd May 2007 and is now Lead Councillor for Culture and Sport.

Tom lives in the heart of Caversham ward and has done since he moved to Reading.  He works for a well known internet bank at Thames Valley Park.

At university Tom read archaeology at masters level.  Originally from the north west Tom has been a school governor and a member of the community health council in his native Lancaster and was the youngest school governor at 22 in Lancashire.

Tom thinks that politicians should help people to achieve the best that they can be, without unnecessary interference. He decided to stand for election because he felt that the former Labour Council was failing Reading.

Cllr Dave Luckett (Caversham)

Dave Luckett was elected in 2008. He lives in the heart of the Caversham ward in Patrick Road. Since he graduated from University he has spent the last 4 years working in the IT sector.

Dave is concerned by the increasing levels of traffic in the ward, particularly around the two bridges and Church Street. He has been working closely with fellow ward Councillors, Andrew Cumpsty and Tom Stanway, on resolving traffic problems in Caversham and is a firm supporter of the need for a third Thames bridge.

Cllr Wazir Hussain (Park)

Wazir Hussain was elected on 3rd May 2007.

Wazir has lived in Reading for 21 years. He and his wife have raised 3 children, who have all now gone on to University. As a local retailer for 15 years Wazir met many local people and from the various stories he heard was inspired to take up the challenge of helping others.

Wazir is a strong believer that if people work hard and are provided with a good education, then they can live honest and productive lives. He is therefore keen to take the Labour run council to task over the poor provision of education services.

Most recently Wazir has been highlighting the problems faced by the residents of Park ward - the litter, crime, graffiti and parking problems. He has been working with Conservative MP, Rob Wilson, to try to resolve the issues that Labour seem unwilling to address.

Cllr Mike Townend (Church)

Mike Townend was elected on 3rd May 2007. He is the Lead Councillor for Communities, Voluntary Sector, Economic Development and Performance

Mike lives in the University area of the town with his wife and their three children.  He has lived in the Royal County of Berkshire for over 20 years and in Reading for seven years.  Mike is a Governor of The Ridgeway Primary School and is currently the Conservative Party Area Chairman for Berkshire.  Mike commutes regularly by train to London where he works as a Senior Executive with a global Information Technology company.

Cllr Tim Harris (Church)

Tim Harris was elected on 3rd May 2007.

Tim has lived in South Reading for many years, since relocating here to work for the Oracle Corporation. Since leaving University and working in Dublin, he has spent 12 years working in IT.

Tim is a keen triathlete and represented Great Britain in the World Long Distance Triathlon Championships in Australia 2006. (4km swim, 120km cycle 30km run).

Outside of Sport his interests are music (a regular at local music groups), Gardening (completed RHS Level II) and politics, with a passion for fairness and getting things done.

As a South Reading resident himself, Tim is keen to improve the lives, of all residents in South Reading.

Cllr Azam Janjua (Church)

Azam Janjua represented Church ward for five years from 2002 to 2007 as a Labour Councillor. Having experienced the local Labour party first hand Azam resigned from the party and later joined the Conservatives. He was elected as a Conservative in 2008.

Azam and his wife have lived in Reading for forty years and in Winton Road in the ward for the last three years. He has three daughters, two of whom are doctors and one a local GP.
